Year in Review: Designing

With just a few days left in 2016 (thank the Lord!), let's take a trip down memory lane and see how MediaPeruana Designs fared this year!

MediaPeruana Designs published EIGHTEEN new knitting patterns in 2016! Twelve patterns were published independently, 2 in Knittin' Little, 1 in Holla Knits, 1 in Knit Picks's On the Go Knits collection, 1 in I Like Knitting and 1 as part of Louet North America's Spring pattern collection.

I'm not going to do a full-on annual income report, though I know some makers and creatives do, and it can help bring their industries into perspective--I'm not quite there yet! I will tell you my best quarter of the year was Q2 (when I published Charm City Knits!), followed by Q4, Q3 and then sad little Q1 bringing up the rear.

I can also tell you that MPD turned a profit this year--meaning after I paid my tech editor, sample knitters, web hosting fees, PayPal fees, model, advertising, etc. I still made a little money! This was the first year I dedicated myself to treating my work as a true small business, rather than a maybe-profitable hobby, and so the first year I really tracked my finances. It is not, by any means, an astounding profit, certainly not something I could live off of, but it's something

My 5 best-selling single patterns this year were Sparia, Cunningham Falls, Annabel Lee, Miraflores and Abrigado (which got a big boost thanks to an appearance in one of Knit Picks' newsletters--many thanks to KP for that!). Charm City Knits also brought in 20% of my total pattern sales for the year!

I tried something new--and, at least IMO, fun!--this year: the Rayado KAL. Everyone who signed up in advance got to participate and knit a brand new, not-yet-released MediaPeruana Designs pattern. The KAL also included some exclusive bonus content--tips, tricks and tutorials. The response was positive, so I plan to do a similar KAL in 2017.

What else do I have in store for 2017? Well, 2016 isn't even over yet, but I've got 9 designs already slated to be published next year. Exciting! Six of those will be part of the adorable sequel to Charm City Knits: Charm City Kids! You can look for that in the first quarter of 2017.

I'm also partnering with some popular independent yarn companies to bring you two new sweater patterns in 2017. Top secret for now, but keep your eyes peeled!

Lastly, in my next blog post I'm going to share a new project with you--some ways you can support MediaPeruana Designs and help me to grow in the new year (with some goodies in it for you too!).

So, as we're wrapping up this challenging year, just a few reminders:

  • Use the code GOODBYE2016 for 25% off single, self-published patterns through the end of 2016.
  • The Selfish KAL kicks off on New Year's Day! Pick any MediaPeruana Designs pattern and knit-along with us--but it has to be something for yourself!
  • When the next quarter starts, the promo pattern for new newsletter subscribers will change--you can get Nevado FREE when you sign up for my email list, until December 31; a different pattern will be offered starting January 1!
  • Sock Spectacular 2016 is nearly over! Get those sock WIPs and FOs posted on Instagram with the tag #sockspectacular2016 for a chance at this month's prize. Post a photo of ALL the socks you finished in 2016 for a chance at the grand prize (yes, a collage is acceptable).

Thank you all for your encouragement and support in 2016--I look forward to bringing you exciting new things in 2017!
