Review: Sweet Sheep Lotion Bar from Love + Leche

I don’t know how your hands are faring these days, but after a dry winter full of topsy-turvy weather here in Maryland, my hands are, quite frankly, a WRECK. Despite stashing lotions and creams around the house to use throughout the day, my nails are brittle and peeling, and my fingertips are rough and dotted with little splits and cracks that not only look terrible but snag my yarn while I’m knitting! (I’ll spare you a photo.) So when I had the opportunity to review a new lotion bar from Love + Leche, I couldn’t sign up fast enough.

Based in New Mexico, Love + Leche sells all natural lotion bars, goat milk soaps, and balms. The lotion bars are made from beeswax, almond oil, organic local calendula flowers and coconut oil, plus essential oils in the scented versions. You can read more about the ingredients and their benefits here on the Love + Leche site.

If you’re scent-sensitive, the lotion bars are available scentless, but I am NOT—I love fragrances, the more the better. So I requested a lavender-mint lotion bar to test out. They also included a mini balm in the citrus-rose scent. Both have a nice, strong scent in the bar, but leave a lighter scent on your skin that lingers for just a bit—it won’t compete with your perfume (if you wear any). The lavender-mint scent is bright and refreshing, it’s perfect for spring; the citrus-rose is very clean smelling and really wakes you up!

I almost didn’t want to use my lotion bar because LOOK HOW ADORABLE! This is a brand new bar design from the company—the Sweet Sheep lotion bar decorated with 2 snuggling sheep friends—that couldn’t be more appropriate for all of us fiber artists.

But of course, I can’t really do a review without using the product. So I reluctantly popped it out of the tin to try it out. I twirled it between my hands a few times and then rubbed the lotion in. It felt rich but not greasy or sticky. I resisted the urge to wipe my palms on my jeans, which I usually do when I’m in a hurry and need dry palms to grab at mischievous children, because I wanted to see if the lotion sunk in on its own—and after a couple minutes, it did!

I’ve been using the bar for a few days, and I’m rather impressed. My skin is softer, the rough spots are disappearing, and my hands don’t feel as dry, so I’m not reapplying every hour. Plus, the scent really perks me up—sometimes I just open the tin and take a deep breath! The bar is so convenient to stash in a project bag—I don’t have to worry about lotion leaking out of a tube and all over my knitting.

If you’re looking for a quality, non-greasy lotion for your dry skin, I would definitely recommend this one (I have a feeling my FibreShare partner will be receiving one!). You can find the Sweet Sheep lotion bar, and lots of other lotions, soaps and balms in various scents, on the Love + Leche website—and I’ve got a coupon for you too! Purchase any lotion bar in a tin ($14+) and get a mini balm sample FREE! Just use code “peruana” when you make your purchase; expires May 1.
