Behind the Scenes: Charm City Kids Photoshoot

Despite the fact that knitwear is most useful in winter, it’s actually the worst time to take photos of your knitwear. The cold air dries out skin, makes your nose run and your eyes tear up. Wind whips your hair around, usually right into your teary eyes, and the landscape is utterly devoid of color.

If you add kids to the mix, it’s a recipe for disaster.

These were the problems I faced as I tried to come up with a good place to take photos for Charm City Kids. Unless we got an uncharacteristically warm day, outside was out; and trying to find a place indoors with lots of light and very few people that we might annoy was a challenge. But my friend Catherine, whose adorable children I borrowed for some modeling, had a fantastic suggestion—our local library.

I actually hadn’t been to this library before, as it just reopened last year, and JJ doesn’t really understand the concept of borrowing books and then giving them back. So I wasn’t sure what to expect. But not only did it have a roomy—and practically empty—play space for kids with lots of toys to keep them occupied, the space was also surrounded by huge windows. Lots of natural light flooded in, and stacks of books and toys provided the perfect background for these kid-friendly knits.

The kids played happily, and I snapped photo after photo, knowing 75% would turn out blurry. While I did have to offer a few candy bribes, I got all the photos done in about an hour.
