I'm so excited to share the very first pattern from Charm City Knits with you: the Hollins Ferry fingerless mitts!

These mitts took their inspiration from my first stomping grounds in Southwest Baltimore. I grew up in a neighborhood called Lakeland, in a little rowhome sandwiched between a woman named Mary and . . . another woman named Mary. My mom's name is also Mary. (You'll be unsurprised to learn that Maryland was originally colonized as a safe haven for Catholics in the new world, and Baltimore is home to the nation's oldest Catholic archdiocese. We have a lot of Marys.)

Hollins Ferry Road was one of the main streets bordering this neighborhood. It winds around Southwest Baltimore, running alongside the Patapsco River for a bit, which ultimately flows into the Chesapeake, as everything here does.

These mitts feature cables that wind subtly back and forth, framing a river of seed stitch that seamlessly flows into the top edge. The pattern includes 3 sizes: 7, 7 ½ and 8” hand circumference, with a customizable length. If you’re looking for an opportunity to practice cabling without a cable need, this is a great project—3 stitch cables are a great size to learn to juggle stitches. The cable pattern is charted, while the rest of the mitt is worked in an unfussy stockinette stitch.

The pattern calls for a single skein of Magpie Fibers Swanky Sock. If you haven’t tried Magpie Fibers yet, you are missing out! Dami’s colorways are gorgeous and this particular base, an 80/10/10 MCN blend, is delightfully soft. Magpie Fibers is based in Frederick, Maryland, which is about an hour outside Baltimore and home to some wonderful restaurants and quirky shops (and also my parents and sister). If you’re coming into town for Maryland Sheep and Wool, you will definitely want to visit Frederick’s LYS, The Knot House, and pet these yarns in person. I’ve got at least 2 more designs coming out this year featuring Magpie Fibers, the yarns are just irresistible.

Here's my sister being a weirdo, but it's totally appropriate, don't you think?
