Miraflores KAL: Choosing your Yarn
The cast-on date for our Miraflores KAL is just over a week away! My original sample was knit in a single-ply fingering weight yarn, Dream in Color Jilly. I opted for a single ply because of the drape it provides, and the subtle sheen coming off the unplied fiber. Jilly is 100% superwash merino wool, 440 yards per 100g skein.
To knit the smaller cowlet (including a swatch!), I used nearly the entire skein--the cowlet alone used 390 yards. If you are knitting the smaller size and want to use just a single skein, I would not select a yarn with fewer than 420 yards, just to be on the safe side! For the larger size and for yarns with fewer yards per skein, you will likely need 2 skeins.
Single-ply Fingering Weight Yarns
Dream in Color Jilly with Cashmere: 440 yards/100g
Malabrigo Mechita: 420 yards/100g
Dragonfly Fibers Pixie: 475 yards/100g
Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light: 420 yards/100g
Neighborhood Fiber Co. Rustic Fingering: 475 yards/100g (This is the yarn I'll be using for the KAL!)
The Plucky Knitter Plucky Single: 430 yards/100g
Tanis Fiber Arts Red Label: 420 yards/115g
Forbidden Woolery Charity: 400 yards/100g
Wandering Wool Saranac Fingering: 400 yards/100g
Of course, you don't have to knit with a single-ply yarn! There are so many beautiful fingering weight yarns out there. Look for something that will drape nicely (a good way to see how a yarn looks worked up is to check the Ravelry projects for your yarn!), and keep your eye on the yardage per skein. The patterning will likely get lost in a highly variegated colorway, so I recommend something tonal or solid.
Another fun idea: use sock yarn leftovers! Switch colors every time you switch pattern sections. Please, someone do this, I want to see what it looks like!
