Pattern Debut: Vaughan Vest

I'm so excited to share my newest pattern, which is part of Knit Picks' Twist and Tweed Fall collection! 

The Vaughan Vest is a v-neck, featuring columns of winding cables framing a panel of woven-style textured stitches, which is repeated on the back. It's finished with simple ribbed hems.

Tweed + sweater vest just screams "college" to me, so I named this piece in honor of the Vaughan Literature building on Bucknell University's campus, where I spent many collegiate hours debating gothic Spanish literature and other esoteric topics that can only interest argumentative college students and hard-core academics. 

My original inspiration for the vest, however, was the cricket sweater/vest worn so dashingly by the men on Downton Abbey a few seasons ago (a design that was, incidentally, popular again in late 90s when I was starting college). I wanted an updated look, with a feminine shape,  more texture, and no pastels. This version is knit in one tweedy color, but I also love it with a couple of contrasting colors along the hems--in fact, I'll be sharing my own version with you soon which features these subtle stripes.

The Vaughan Vest is a great layering piece for fall, and is available in a wide range of sizes, from 32-44" bust. It is intended to be worn with 0-2" negative ease. It's knit from the bottom up, in the round to the armholes, and works up quickly in worsted weight. The cables are charted. It's also an economical project--it uses 5-8 balls of Wool of the Andes Tweed, which is a steal at $2.62-$3.49 per 50g ball.
