Non-sock Projects for Sock Yarn

It's been all things "sock" this week, but I know there are some sock yarn lovers out there who don't actually love socks. And if you are a sock knitter, you inevitably  end up with leftover yarn that's not enough for another pair. Or maybe you're just socked out. Whatever the reason, some sock yarn just isn't meant for socks, so here are a few non-sock (non-shawl!) project ideas for single skeins of yarn or leftovers:

Hexipuffs

The Beekeeper's Quilt--the pattern that started the mini skein mania! You can knit multiple puffs from a single skein for a more planned blanket, or just knit them up with leftovers or mini skeins for completely random blanket. 

Mitered Square Blanket

There are many versions of this scrappy project; this one by Georgie Hallam is worked seamlessly. As with the hexipuffs, you can plan your blanket or use scraps.

Newborn Hats

Sock yarn is good for preemie and newborn hats because it's thin, (usually) soft and warm. Many hats this size only require about 25 grams of yarn, so it's also good for leftovers. Even if you don't know any babies, your local NICU may be interested in hats, so give them a call. Ollie's Hat is a free Ravelry download from yours truly.

Ornaments

A great scrap project, and a way to bring a little wooly warmth to your Christmas tree--these are my Hard Candy ornaments, a free pattern. I also love these knit stars.

Jewelry

Sounds a little weird, but knit-covered bangles are adorable, as is this Cabled Braided necklace.

Headband

You'll never talk me out of wearing headbands. Functional or decorative--or both!--I just love them. My Lady Lindy headband can be downloaded from Interweave.

Shrug

More than a shawl, less than a sweater. This lace shrug by Andi Satterlund uses just one skein!

Sweaters

OK, if you don't want to knit socks, maaaaaybe you don't want to knit a fingering weight sweater either, but these airy layering pieces are great for seasonal transitions, and if you use a plain pattern, you can add stripes to use up leftovers. Hannah Fettig is a good pick for these types of sweaters, like her Wispy Cardi (which I have on the needles and will finished SOMEDAY).
