Charm City Kids: Ensign Fell
Today’s Charm City Kids blog spotlight pattern is Ensign Fell, a darling earflap hat for boys and girls; the pattern includes 3 sizes, to fit toddlers to teens.
When it came time to rework the Admiral Fell hat for little people, the first thought that came to mind was adding earflaps to really up the cute factor. While the original hat was designed to be slouchy and stylish, making the kids’ version a beanie style hat with additional coverage at the ears transformed it into a more practical cold weather accessory.
I thought a more playful yarn would really bring out the kid in this hat, so I decided to try Spincycle Yarns Dyed in the Wool. It has a handspun look and feel, and the colors shift subtly, which paired well with the rows of raindrop eyelets in this piece. It looked a bit uneven as I knit, but bloomed beautifully when washed and blocked.
This hat can actually be worn with either side facing it out, but I opted to put a pom-pom on it, which makes it even more adorable, in my opinion, but does take away the reversibility option. I used some heavier, solid-colored scrap yarn for the pom to contrast with the varied colors in the hat.
And I can’t finish this post without wishing my sweet J.J. a very happy FOURTH birthday! These 4 years have flown by, I can hardly believe my baby isn’t a baby at all anymore.
You can purchased the Ensign Fell pattern for $5.50, or grab the whole Charm City Kids collection for $11.99.
