Charm City Kids: IronBird
IronBird is the final spotlight pattern from the Charm City Kids collection. A simple 2 color knee-hi sock with garter stitch stirrups, these socks are great chance to show off your team colors, house colors or just your little one’s favorite colors.
IronBird includes 5 sizes, as does the original Eutaw Street pattern, so between the two, you can make baseball-style socks for the whole family! The only difference for IronBird is the use of 2 colors, rather than 3, to minimize the number of skeins to buy (but you could easily add a 3rd color, especially if you’re working from stash or leftovers).
I want to give a shout out to Kate Atherley and her wonderful book, Custom Socks, which includes exhaustive information about sizing for men, women, and children. It was invaluable in providing measurements for this pattern, since I didn’t have 5 kids with different sized feet to measure myself.
The sample is knit in Tanis Fiber Arts Purewash Fingering—just like the Rittenhouse mittens—and despite using that beautiful deep blue with a nearly-white gray, there’s no bleeding. The yardage on this yarn is very generous, so you can easily get 2 pair of socks out of 2 skeins—and probably more, depending on the size!
One note on pattern measurements—kids grow at dramatically different rates and in spurts, so what’s knee-hi for my 4-year-old may not be for yours. The heel flap length is given, so, assuming you can get your kid to stand still, you can measure from knee to heel and subtract to see how long to knit the leg.
You can find the IronBird pattern here and buy it for $5.50, or view the whole Charm City Kids collection here.
And now that we’ve looked at each pattern from this collection, some fun news: a new knit-a-long is coming! The Charm City Spring Fling will kick off on March 1 and run through May 15. To participate, knit any pattern from Charm City Kids or Charm City Knits. More details soon!
