Charm City Kids: Rittenhouse

Today's pattern spotlight from Charm City Kids are some itty bitty mittens! Originally just a light layer with no fingers, when it came time to rework Hollins Ferry for kids I thought full mittens would be more appropriate.

For Rittenhouse I kept the same central panel of waving cables and seed stitch, adding a full mitten top and working the mittens at a tighter gauge, for added warmth. I included 3 sizes, based on hand circumference and easily customized for length.

The trouble with using fingering weight yarn for kids' accessories is that you need so little, yet the yarn comes in such large skeins. So I decided early on that I would use the same yarn for the mittens and the IronBird socks. I knit the toddler size mittens and the US 10.5/6" circumference socks and still have plenty of yarn for another (smaller) pair of socks, and maybe even more mittens. 

The yarn I chose is the latest from one of my all-time favorite dyers, Tanis Fiber Arts. Purewash Fingering is 100% organic merino and is now available as part of TFA's permanent offerings, in all those gorgeous colors. It's super soft and delightful to work with--your only difficulty will be choosing a color!
